Korean investigative reality TV show: “Crime Scene”

Crime Scene

[2016-12-09 UPDATE: Season 3 of Crime Scene is slated to air in the first half of 2017!

Sources: Naver, Reddit]

“Crime Scene” is the second Korean reality TV show that I am recommending on my blog, the previous being “The Genius“. Both are similar in a way that they test the intelligence, observation and deduction skills of the cast in a setting that depicts real-life activities and human reactions as realistically as possible.

“Crime Scene” is touted to be the first ever role-playing detective game in Korea. Produced by Korean cable network JTBC, the show presents murder cases that are modelled after real-world incidents, and cast members will play out the various suspect roles that they have chosen prior to the start of the game.

One of the cast members will play the role of the real killer, and he/she will have to deflect suspicion from himself/herself while diverting attention to the others. It is up to the cast members to build a case against whom they think is the real killer.

One case typically spans over two episodes. The cast members are given time to familiarise themselves with their new chosen suspect identities and dress up accordingly for a more convincing portrayal. They will then come together to gather evidence at the crime scene, find the murder weapon, deduce possible motives, and catch loopholes in alibis. Facts regarding the case, such as the background of the victim and the cause of death will be presented to the cast at intervals. The cast will also get opportunities to question one another.

After forming conclusions based on their investigations, the cast will choose whom they think is the ‘real killer’ among them. The cast member chosen by the majority will then be locked up. If he/she is revealed to be the ‘real killer’, the cast members who have chosen correctly will win their individual portions of the gold coins. On the other hand, if he/she is not the ‘real killer’, the cast member playing the real killer will walk away with all the gold coins. Viewers in Korea can also get involved by participating in the live voting while the episode is airing.

Crime Scene cast

The permanent cast consists of:
– Jun Hyunmoo (TV host);
– Park Jiyoon (TV presenter);
– Hong Jinho (former pro-gamer; he also appeared in “The Genius“);
– Lim Banggeul (lawyer); and
– NS Yoonji (singer).

The guest member for the first four episodes is Henry of Super Junior (singer). Minhyuk of CNBLUE (singer) will take over as the guest member from episode five, which will also feature a non-role playing veteran police investigator to give his own observations.

You can find all the English subbed episodes here, subbed by Bumdidlyump.

  1. Do you know where to find Eng Sub of Nazotoki Battle TORE! and Dero! series, and Run for Money Tousouchuu? (I saw your reply to someone else and decided to check them out)

    • Hi Cherry, you can try search for Tore and Dero in Youtube. There are some Eng subbed episodes. I believe the Chinese subbed episodes are more complete though, if you can understand Chinese.

    • Hi twLand, glad to know that you enjoyed the shows as much as I do! I have heard that Crime Scene may return with Season 3 at the end of the year, but of course nothing is confirmed until they announce it. I am also on the lookout for clever shows like TG and CS, unfortunately to no avail. The closest I can find are Japanese variety like Nazotoki Battle TORE! and Dero! series, and Run for Money Tousouchuu. Alternatively, you can check out the manga, drama and film versions of Liar Game, which TG was based on..

      • I’ve been recommended ‘Code: secret room’. I haven’t watched it yet myself, so I’m not sure how good it really is. But I thought I’d mention it, as it may be worth it to check it out 🙂
        It’s still a little bit in this genre I think, as it is also some deducting and puzzles that have to be figured out. The people have to solve puzzles and things to escape from the room that they are trapped in. Just thought I’d mention it n,n

    • Hi Karthig, it was rumoured at that point of time, but now the date is probably delayed until next year since the PD is busy with the Yoo Jaesuk’s Sugar Man show which had just been scheduled for regular programming.

      • Hi Ness, thanks for dropping by! I had watched some Chinese subbed episodes of CODE: Secret Room, but I find the editing rather poor in comparison to Crime Scene. Nevertheless, it is still worth a watch since there are very few of such brainy programmes around and the puzzles are interesting enough. Among some of players are Heechul of Super Junior, Shin Jaepyung of Peppertones, Oh Hyunmin from The Genius and Jung Junha from Infinity Challenge. For a non-competitive brainy programme, I recommend Problematic Men.

  3. Dear Sir or Madam,
    It is very interesting game show. I am working in Southeast Asia Television (SEATV) and I would like to buy this game show to air in Cambodia with SEATV, but I don’t know how to contact the company who produce this game show. Could you help to give me the contact person who can deal with this game ?

    Best Regards,
    Chenda

    • Hi Lewis, I’m so glad to know that you’re watching these programmes, as I rate them as among the top few Korean variety shows. I have not been updating on my post – maybe I should now – but yes, I am following Season 3 as fervently as before. Jang Dongmin and Oh Hyunmin are my favourite players for S3. Season 2 of Crime Scene is reportedly to commence early next year. Thanks for dropping by! 🙂
